1. All About Our Spectacular Two Weeks
The past two weeks have been crazy and exciting! This week we learned about Rachel's Challenge. We had an assembly where we had to put a giant puzzle together with one of Rachel's quotes. We had to cooperate and work together to solve the puzzle. Another thing that we did this week was learn about range, median, and mode in math. We are going to have our first math test on Monday about that, bar graphs, line plots and clusters, pictographs, coordinate grids with ordered pairs, in and out boxes, and line graphs. We need to study this weekend and finish our review packets. In language arts we read our first story, Island of the Blue Dolphins, in the Risks and Consequences unit. It is about a girl who gets deserted on an island and tries to escape to find her family. We also learned about common and proper nouns, and suffixes. We took our first lesson assessment today and did a fantastic job. We also took our first big spelling test. We loved showing our families around at Meet the Teacher Night and getting ice cream. We laughed so hard when our families couldn't pick our self portraits and magnifying glassess off the wall. We can't wait to find out who won the literacy slogan contest! We have been busy!

2. Our First Awesome Week in Fourth Grade
This is what we did this week in room 109! On the first day of school we played "getting to know you games" like Just Like Me, a room 109 scavenger hunt (looking around the classroom), and made nametag glyphics. We also learned about line graphs, bar graphs, pictographs, line plots, and coordinate grids in math. We play Around the World every day before lunch to practice our math facts. We have taken two math facts tests and many people have already passed addition! Once all of us master addition, subtraction, and multiplication we will have a huge class party! In science we are starting to learn about plants and have homework this weekend to fill up a bag full of seeds. We can look in fruits, outside by trees, in the woods, and in vegetables to find them. In language arts we took our first benchmark and think that we did amazingly awesome! Today, we also took a drawing (following directions) test and drew pictures of a "triangle-ope" and a B-5 alien. As you can see, our first week of fourth grade was fun, awesome, amazing, great, exciting, enthusiastic, fabulous, and BUSY!!!! Note: Each Friday we will update our Room 109 Blog with all that we have done throughout the week. We take turns going around the room, and each student either adds a sentence or details to a previously written sentence. Check back each week to see what we have been up to!

3. End of Summer
| Dear Room 109 Students,
I hope that you have been enjoying summer and that you are as excited as I am for school to start! I was delighted to see the list of students who will be with us in room 109 – I have already met quite a few of you this past year, and I can’t wait for September 6th to arrive so that we can really get to know each other. Over the next week I will be getting our classroom ready (we have brand new ceilings and lights!) and meeting with the other fourth grade teachers to plan exciting projects, activities, and field trips.
Things that we can look forward to in September include growing our own plants in science, learning about taking risks in language arts, creating New York State maps in social studies, and polling the class to create our own bar graphs in math. Also, be sure to check out our schedule of specials on the FAQs page. Since the first day of school is on a Tuesday, you will need to bring or wear sneakers for P.E.!
Also, don’t forget about the summer homework assignment to write me a letter telling about one summer adventure that you have enjoyed. If you would like to get a head start on fourth grade, you can also read your favorite novel at least 15 minutes every day and practice your addition and subtraction math facts!
On our classroom website you will find lots of information throughout the year, including event pictures, videos, weekly spelling words, future newsletters, and the classroom blog that we will update each Friday (here!). Check it out!
On the FAQs page I have compiled some general classroom information that hopefully will answer some questions about fourth grade. If you have ANY other thoughts or concerns, please feel free to send me an email at smisco@ocs.cnyric.org or call (315) 552-5050 to leave me a message at school. I look forward to meeting you on September 6th and your families at the upcoming “Meet the Teacher Night” on September 22nd!
Sincerely, Ms. Misco
